Connect SpecDrive
to Claude
Skip the copy-paste. Claude reads your specs directly from SpecDrive and starts building. No terminal, no friction.
MCP Server URL
The MCP connection works from day one. No special app version required. If you have SpecDrive installed, you're ready to connect.
01Open Customize → Connectors
In the Claude desktop app or Claude.ai, open Customize → Connectors. (Connectors used to live under Settings — they've moved to Customize.) In Claude Code, add it to your claude_mcp_config.json using the MCP server URL above.
02Add a custom connector
Hit the + at the top of the Connectors list and paste https://mcp.specdrive.app as the MCP server URL. Sign in with your GitHub account and authorise access. You stay in control — the connection only works after you explicitly approve it.
03Start building from your spec
Ask Claude to read your constitution and implement a spec. It gets everything it needs — principles, user story, tech plan, and task checklist — without you pasting a thing.
Try these prompts:
04What SpecDrive can do
Once connected, Claude can see your projects, read a spec, and start building — all on its own. Here's what it can reach inside SpecDrive:
- Finds your projects — Claude lists the spec projects you keep on GitHub.
- Shows your specs — it browses the specs inside a project so you can pick one to build.
- Reads your principles — it picks up the project's constitution, the guiding rules your code should follow.
- Reads a full spec — the user story, acceptance criteria, tech plan, and task checklist, all in one go.
-
Understands your context — it reads your
CLAUDE.mdso it works the way your project expects.
05Troubleshooting
-
Claude can't see my projects
Make sure you authorised GitHub access when prompted, and that the repo has a
.specify/folder. If it doesn't, export a spec from SpecDrive first. -
The connection won't authorise
Sign in with the GitHub account that owns your spec repos, and approve access when Claude asks. The connection only works once you've explicitly approved it.
-
Claude says no specs found
Export at least one spec from SpecDrive to GitHub before connecting — Claude reads your specs from the repo, so there needs to be one there.

06Privacy & data access
All AI processing runs on your device via Apple Intelligence. SpecDrive's MCP connection only reads your .specify/ files and CLAUDE.md from GitHub — it never accesses your source code, assets, or anything outside your spec folder. Your GitHub token is never shared with SpecDrive's servers.
